ROMFIX system on Spaarndammerdijk in Amsterdam

The ROMFIX system stabilises Amsterdam’s Spaarndammerdijk

Application and techniques / By Team ROMFIX

The worn-out foundation needed replacement.

Amsterdam’s historic Spaarndammerdijk was built in the 13th century to protect the hinterland from the Zuiderzee and the IJ. It urgently needed a new foundation and bedding layer. Heavy traffic had caused substantial settlement, and the worn-out foundation needed replacement.

Working together to create a stable base

The City of Amsterdam and H. van Wijk Infra chose the innovative ROMFIX system with ROMFIX R’Cel, R’Tex and E’Grid. The honeycomb-shaped R’Cel geocell is filled with crushed aggregate slightly above the top of the cells to maintain constant confinement pressure. The material is compacted and covered with sand, ready for the final bedding layer. E’Grid holds the fill in place from below, preventing it from spreading. R’Tex keeps it separate from the subgrade. Together, these components create a highly durable build-up.

An innovative system

The combination of geogrid and honeycomb cells confines the aggregate. The grid below the cells prevents the material from sinking, creating a solid, durable base with substantially less risk of settlement. The ROMFIX system has restored the Spaarndammerdijk’s strength. This is the first time we have reinforced an Amsterdam dike using our patented ROMFIX system.

Less earthwork, greater stability

The ROMFIX system strengthens infrastructure and makes it more durable while offering substantial operational benefits. It requires much less earthwork than traditional foundation methods, saving time and resources and making projects more efficient.
