Spring tip – Pressure washing

Application and techniques / By Team ROMFIX

Pressure washing? Take care.

Take care when cleaning paving with a pressure washer. The force of the water can damage the surface layer, making it rougher and allowing dirt to adhere more readily. The wrong pressure or nozzle can also damage the joints.

Use a flat-fan nozzle

Always use a flat-fan nozzle. A rotary dirt blaster can be too aggressive for the paving and joints. A flat-fan nozzle produces a wide, flat spray instead of a concentrated jet, spreading the pressure across a larger area to protect the joints and paving units.

How can you prevent damage to your paving?

Keep these points in mind when pressure washing:

  • Use a flat-fan nozzle and keep it at least 30 cm from the surface.
  • Work at an angle of about 45 degrees instead of pointing straight down, so the pressure is not directed squarely at the paving.
  • Adjust the water pressure. A maximum of 120 bar is generally safe for most paving and joints.
  • Move evenly across the paving. Avoid staying in one spot for too long, which can cause damage.

Which joints can withstand pressure washing?

All our resin-bound jointing products can withstand pressure washing. ARDEX cement-based jointing mortars can also withstand it.

Please note! Our jointing sand and loose-filled joints are unsuitable for pressure washing, as the sand washes out easily.
