Spring tip – Clean paving

Application and techniques / By Team ROMFIX

Keep sand and soil off your paving

Clean paving looks tidy and helps prevent weeds growing around the paving and joints. Sand and soil provide a fertile growing medium for weed seeds carried onto the paving by wind or birds. Once the seeds find moisture and nutrients in the dirt, they germinate and grow between the joints. Over time, this can make the paving less stable.

How can you prevent sand and soil from building up?

Good maintenance starts with regular sweeping, ideally every week in dry weather. This keeps dirt from building up and becoming lodged in the joints. Use a sturdy broom, such as a coir broom or jointing broom. A coir broom is ideal for dry, loose dirt and fine sand. A jointing broom is designed to sweep dirt out of the joints without damaging them.

Our advice: Regular maintenance prevents weeds and keeps your paving looking good for longer. Dealing with stubborn dirt? Read our tips on pressure washing or using a heavy-duty cleaner.
