Using ROMFIX drainage bedding mortar often reduces the amount of earthworks required. Here, we look at two common situations:
Using ROMFIX drainage bedding mortar reduces earthworks in both cases. Replacing earthworks with ROMFIX reinforcement technology improves the stiffness of the subgrade by 230% compared with the existing unreinforced situation.
“An existing patio needs new paving. In this example, 12 cm of soil would normally be excavated and replaced with 12 cm of fill sand. The ROMFIX system offers an alternative: excavate 6 cm, lay a geotextile and ROMFIX grid, then apply 6 cm of ROMFIX drainage bedding mortar. This halves excavation and material transport. Use polymer grid reinforcement in place of steel to prevent reinforcement corrosion. The highly permeable mortar regularly exposes reinforcement to water. The patio also no longer needs an edging kerb.
“A through road is to be built on sandy ground. In this example, the conventional build-up uses 60 cm of crushed aggregate topped with three layers of asphalt. The ROMFIX cellular system needs only 20 cm of crushed aggregate to achieve greater stiffness. This saves 40 cm of excavation, soil removal, imported material and compaction. In almost all cases, the ROMFIX cellular system is therefore cheaper than using 60 cm of crushed aggregate.”
ROMFIX is the Dutch importer and authorised installer of the German ROMEX brand. “The most sustainable way to carry out all your jointing work.” We supply jointing products that keep paving free from weeds, as well as drainage bedding mortar to virtually eliminate settlement.
