Applying gravel binder: how to bind decorative gravel and chippings

Want to bind decorative gravel or chippings into a permeable, low-maintenance surface? This guide explains what a gravel binder does, when to choose ROMFIX Draindeco or ROMFIX Clear-Deco UV, what to look out for during installation and how to bind gravel or chippings step by step.

What does a gravel binder do?

A gravel binder turns loose decorative gravel or chippings into a permeable, low-maintenance finish. It bonds the loose particles together to form a firm, stable layer that does not shift or develop ruts.

A gravel binder is suitable for tree surrounds, parking bays, roof terraces and garden paths.

When should you choose ROMFIX Draindeco or ROMFIX Clear-Deco UV?

ROMFIX offers two gravel binders: ROMFIX Draindeco and ROMFIX Clear-Deco UV. Both are applied in much the same way, although the process depends on the type of decorative gravel or chippings you want to bind.

ROMFIX Draindeco is suitable for binding dark decorative gravel and chippings.

ROMFIX Clear-Deco UV is suitable for binding light-coloured decorative gravel and chippings. The binder is UV-resistant and colour-stable, so the gravel or chippings do not yellow in sunlight.

What should you look out for when applying ROMFIX Draindeco or ROMFIX Clear-Deco UV?

Several factors can visibly affect the finish when applying gravel binder. An unsuitable base, damp gravel or chippings, and inconsistent mixing times can all make a significant difference. Follow the steps below.

How to apply gravel binder step by step

Step 1: Prepare a stable, permeable base.

The base must be stable and permeable and designed for the expected load. Loads applied after installation must not cause the finished surface to settle. Decide in advance how the surface will be used. Decorative applications such as garden paths or patios and trafficked applications such as parking bays or driveways require different layer thicknesses and base build-ups.

Step 2: Use only dry materials and work in dry weather.

For both binders, the decorative gravel or chippings must be completely dry. The base must also be dry.

Step 3: Check the decorative gravel or chippings before use.

To minimise variations in colour and texture, check the batch numbers if you are using several bags or deliveries. This helps ensure you are using the same decorative gravel or chippings throughout.

Step 4: Choose the right gravel binder.

Use ROMFIX Draindeco for dark decorative gravel and chippings. Use ROMFIX Clear-Deco UV for light-coloured decorative gravel and chippings.

Step 5: Keep mixing ratios and times consistent.

Mix the decorative gravel or chippings with ROMFIX Draindeco in a mixer for five minutes before pouring. For ROMFIX Clear-Deco UV, mix for three minutes before pouring. Use the same ratio and mixing time for every batch to prevent variations in colour and texture.

Step 6: Add quartz sand for trafficked applications.

When using ROMFIX Clear-Deco UV on heavily loaded surfaces, you can add quartz sand to the mix.

Quartz sand improves cohesion and slip resistance. Adding it extends the mixing time by one minute, bringing the total mixing time for ROMFIX Clear-Deco UV to four minutes.

Step 7: Lay the material evenly and neatly.

Keep the layer thickness consistent as you lay the decorative gravel or chippings. The way the surface looks before curing is how it will look afterwards, so the finish you apply determines the final appearance.

Step 8: Reduce stress and cracking.

Laying decorative gravel or chippings too close to a wall or edging kerb can cause stress and cracking. Leave a movement joint between the structures and the decorative gravel. You can form the movement joint with MorTec Soft.

Step 9: Protect the work during curing.

Keep the decorative gravel or chippings dry while they cure and allow air to circulate. Avoid covering the surface completely. You can walk on it after 24 hours, and it can take its full load after six days.

Common mistakes

Most mistakes happen during application. Common examples include:

  • Using decorative gravel or chippings that have not been de-dusted and dried
  • Working on a wet or unstable base.
  • Using the same build-up for decorative and trafficked applications.
  • Omitting quartz sand where it is needed.
  • Varying the mixing time between batches.
  • Leaving an uneven finish.
  • Allowing too little drying time or providing too little protection.
