Product information
ROMFIX Bindmiddel is a component of a single-sized aggregate drainage bedding mortar that is extremely permeable to gases and water. This binder is a constituent of our ROMFIX drainage bedding mortar and, together with ROMFIX crushed stone aggregate, creates an extremely strong, stable and water-permeable bedding layer for almost any type of paving. This product is used in both public spaces and domestic settings to prevent settlement in paving, including decorative paving. The correct system build-up is essential for durable, weed-free paving with minimal maintenance costs. Combined with ROMFIX split 2-5 mm, this binder forms a strong base that withstands heavy traffic loads. The fine aggregate combination also allows rainwater to drain away easily thanks to a void content of approximately 30%. This is a key requirement for modern highway authorities and garden owners. Only the right sub-base can meet today’s requirements.
Substrate
The drainage bedding mortar has extremely high water permeability, making it suitable for almost all soil types. Combined with the ROMFIX cellular structure, it is even suitable for soils with low bearing capacity, such as peat!
Application
Drainage bedding mortar creates a water-permeable, bound bedding layer for both light and heavy loads. A wide range of paving products can then be laid on it, including porcelain paving, clay pavers, stone setts and concrete block paving.
For small and large areas
The binder for drainage bedding mortar can be used for both small and large areas. The easy-to-handle 20 kg bags are most suitable for smaller areas. You can mix it yourself using crushed stone aggregate, water and a mortar mixer.
Silo
For a large area, the drainage bedding mortar can also be supplied in a two-compartment silo system, with the crushed stone aggregate and binder stored separately. Simply connect water and electricity, and your drainage bedding mortar is mixed in the correct proportions, ready to use straight away!
Mixing ROMFIX drainage bedding mortar is much easier with a purpose-designed ROMFIX mortelmolen (mortar mixer).

Application
Application instructions
- Working time: approximately 2 hours at an application temperature of +20°C
- Lower temperatures extend the curing time
- Higher temperatures shorten the curing time
- Walkable after 6 hours; final release for use after 24 hours (at a substrate temperature of approximately +20°C)
Step-by-step guide
- The substrate must be water-permeable and have sufficient bearing capacity for the intended application. Concrete bases must have an adequate fall, and we recommend using a drainage mat.
- Use crushed stone aggregate with a particle size of 2 to 5 mm. Place the washed, dust-free aggregate in the mixer and start mixing. Always use a clean mixer.
- While mixing, add the binder at a ratio of 1:4 (one part binder to four parts crushed stone aggregate). When measuring with a bucket, the ratio remains 1:4; when using a shovel, it becomes approximately 1:5.
- Mix thoroughly.
- While mixing, add water until a homogeneous, earth-moist consistency is achieved.
- Empty the mixer onto the substrate.
- Spread the mix evenly. ROMFIX drainage bedding mortar is easy to lay and level.
- When laying paving slabs or natural stone slabs in ROMFIX drainage bedding mortar, fully coat the underside of each slab with a suitable bonding slurry.
- Paving units such as clay pavers, concrete blocks and block paving must have a bonding layer applied to their underside before they are laid in ROMFIX drainage bedding mortar.
